Part 1 of 2 – Organizing and Equipping Your Garage
Setting up a garage for your restoration needs is the most important phase of your car‘s restoration. Without a properly equipped shop, you will not be able to rebuild your car correctly and safely.
The most important items needed are the proper tools for the task. Spend the money to purchase the correct tools for the job. They will save you time and money in the end. You can never have too many tools.
If your garage is not already wired for items like a compressor, it is recommended that you hire a licensed electrician, and have a panel box installed so you will be able to have several dedicated circuits with their own circuit breakers. These dedicated circuits should include one for the air compressor. The last thing you need is to overload your electrical system and the garage catches fire. Install outlets on both sides of your garage in order to cut down on the use of dangerous extension cords.
See your work! You can never have too much lighting. Use quality fixtures that give off a good supply of lighting. Good lighting reduces eye strain, which, in turn, increases the quality of your work. Drop lights are a must for under dash and under body areas. And it doesn’t hurt to get two! Never fails, when you need a drop light the most, one will fail.
A large vise is a necessity on a nice solid bench. It should be mounted on the corner with lots of space surrounding the area. Another great tool is a grinder. It can be equipped with grinding stones, buffing pads, and wire brush. They are simple to change out and will come in handy more often than you think. You should have at least 1 horse so that it does not over heat when used for extended periods of time.
